![]() On January 20, 1993, she became the first woman and the first black woman to recite a poem at a presidential inauguration, reading her “On The Pulse Of Morning” poem at Bill Clinton’s inauguration. In the 1950s, she was a San Francisco famed Calypso dancer and singer in the 1960s, she rose to become a writer and core part of the Civil Rights Movement alongside Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr, and in the 1970s, she was famed for writing poetry that addressed issues of racial and gender inequality. Having spread her talents across dancing, singing, literature, and poetry, it’s no wonder her impact is still felt so strongly four years on from her death. As we continue her fight for equality, her endless poems and autobiographies serve as pillars for how to progress the world’s social and political reality. And what better way to remember such an iconic and important figure.Writer and activist Maya Angelou’s voice was so powerful, it still rings loudly across the globe. In today’s America, it’s an important message to hear. Although it speaks to systemic problems more broadly, the poem also emphasizes the individual strength needed to rise above these efforts to oppress, obscure and dehumanize. The message of “Still I Rise” is especially important in a social environment where violence against women remains pervasive, and where racial inequalities relentlessly poison the status quo. Taken as a whole, they constitute a legacy that won’t soon be forgotten by anyone whose life she has touched. But so has her capacity to love, her willingness to forgive and overcome. Her ability to detail these experiences with such lyricism have made her a legend. In many ways, her experiences of violence and abuse are deeply entrenched in the narrative of black America, especially black womanhood. But more than that, they formed the foundation for a life dedicated to the rhetoric and practice of freedom, and the empowerment of others. The ability to “rise,” repeatedly, from such depths was never a given, but the fruit of tremendous inner strength – something Angelou possessed in spades. These stanzas breathe with the brutalities leveled against black women as part of American routine. I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
